Brand strategists can look at the same information as everyone else and see something different. Some acquire that ability by wearing other hats first. I’ve tried on eclectic ones. Starting with a bullet proof vest as a federal investigator, I changed into a suit as an attorney, and then landed on denim as a strategist. These “hats” provided a wealth of experience and a unique perspective.

Attorney, Boston, MA, 2003 to 2009

Started as a federal government investigator advising judges on sentencing and interviewing convicted criminals like carjackers and drug dealers. Then moved to a law firm as a trial attorney. Eventually opened a solo practice counseling startups like Karmaloop, an online streetwear retailer, and managing an independent singer/songwriter including negotiating a contract with MTV.
